LOT DETAILS

Materials:

oil on canvas

Size Notes:

Canvas: 21¼ by 25¾ in. (54 by 65.4 cm.)

Edition:

This work on canvas is unlined, but the tacking edges have been reinforced. The stretcher seems to be original. The paint layer is clean and seems to have been lightly varnished. Frieseke painted onto a raw piece of linen, which is not uncommon for this artist. However, in this case, the olive tree on the right shows numerous areas of instability and paint loss. There is also paint loss in the trees beneath the village in the distance, and between the two large olive tree trunks on the left side. There is another small patch of loss in one of the shadows in the lower right corner. There are a few other isolated spots of loss in the upper center. Fully retouching the work is not recommended, but a few areas could be selectively retouched to make the work feel less compromised.
